If I wrote, “Good joke – although I didn’t laugh out loud, it was certainly funny, and I appreciate your wit and charm,” instant messaging would be a lot less instant.

If you are in a bad mood and just dont feel funny at the moment you can write LOL to show respect for the other persons joke. Because at another time it really would be funny to you. So dont worry about it. It is a way of being polite and keeping things not so serious.

I do, usually when someone says something that’s meant to be funny but that I don’t think is funny.
